Trial-based economic evaluations are increasingly conducted to support healthcare decision-making but there are inevitable methodological challenges. This tutorial provides step-by-step guidance on how to combine appropriate statistical methods using a ready-to-use R script, and addresses missing data, correlated costs and effects, baseline imbalances, and skewness of costs and/or effects. The authors also provide the theoretical background of these methods, and demonstrate their application through a simulated trial-based economic evaluation.

This video is intended to provide researchers with an introduction to the second part of conducting a meta-analysis: quantitatively pooling. The goal of this meta-analysis is to synthesize multiple published estimates from parameters of interest (such as disease-related mortality or the efficacy of a treatment) into a single input for use in a decision model. This video is part of the Conducting Cost-Effectiveness Analysis with VA Data (HCEA) free course offered by the U.S. Department of…

This video is intended to provide a discussion on various methods for deriving probabilities that are needed for decision models. Presented are the concepts of literature based Odds Ratios and Relative Risks, which need to be transformed into probabilities, how to deal with probability estimates from time frames not relevant to the model in question, and how to derive probabilities from published summary statistics. This lecture is aimed at the researcher who is interested in operationalizing…

Ths video is intended to provide a review the HERC Average Cost and the Managerial Cost Accounting data system and the different data sets useful for providing cost and utilization data for research studies. This video is part of the Conducting Cost-Effectiveness Analysis with VA Data (HCEA) free course offered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Health Services Research and Development group focused on cost-effectiveness analysis and budget impact analyses. There were a total…

Tutorial/PrimerPublication, Teaching Resource 2017Discrete Choice Experiments: A Guide to Model Specification, Estimation and Software
This is a user guide on the analysis of data (including best-worst and best-best data) …
This is a user guide on the analysis of data (including best-worst and best-best data) generated from discrete-choice experiments (DCEs), comprising a theoretical review of the main choice models followed by practical advice on estimation and post-estimation. Authors also provide a review of standard software. Authors argue that choice of modelling approach depends on the research questions, study design and constraints in terms of quality/quantity of data and that decisions made in relation to analysis of…

Using the currently topical issue of whether SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) anti-depressants cause birth defects, the module aims to provide students with a general understanding of the following: (1) human risk factor causation as determined by epidemiologic methods; (2) the limits of non-human toxicological evidence to the assessment of causality in humans; (3) the importance of pharmacovigilance for all medications; (4) special difficulties in identifying causes of human birth defects; (5) the importance of…

The aim of cost-utility analysis is to support decision making in healthcare by providing a standardized mechanism for comparing resource use and health outcomes across programmes of work. The focus of this review is the denominator of the cost-utility analysis, specifically the methodology and statistical challenges associated with calculating QALYs from patient-level data collected as part of a trial. The authors provide a brief description of the most common questionnaire used to calculate patient level…
