Value-of-information analysis (VOI) is an analytic approach used to inform research priorities, guide clinical trial design, and provide information for decisions about reimbursement. The authors review existing web-based tools to facilitate VOI calculations. These include Sheffield Accelerated Value of Information (SAVI), the web interface to the BCEA (Bayesian Cost-Effectiveness Analysis) R package (BCEAweb), Rapid Assessment of Need for Evidence (RANE), and Value of Information for Cardiovascular Trials and Other Comparative Research (VICTOR).

This study indicated that news users across ten different European countries are quite concerned about misinformation in their information environment. Respondents were most likely to associate politicians, corporations, and foreign actors with misinformation. They perceived misinformation to be most common for topics like immigration, the economy, and the environment. This offered support for the increasingly more relative and politicized status of facts in people’s credibility perceptions. Yet, differences across sources and issues were relatively modest,…

This perspective anticipates the availability of serologic antibody testing and considers its potential usefulness in mitigation policy to reduce COVID-19 transmission. For example: Could we screen for serologic antibodies as a proxy for possible immunity and identify people who could return to the workplace with less severe mitigation measures? The authors acknowledge the uncertainties raised by many policy actors, including the WHO, such as, "Do antibodies confer immunity and, if so, for how long? How accurate is…

Multiple criteria decision analysis (MCDA) has been proposed as a method for determining the criteria …
Multiple criteria decision analysis (MCDA) has been proposed as a method for determining the criteria to be used in health technology assessment. A standard criticism of MCDA is that it lacks attention to securing legitimacy for its decisions. Accountability for reasonableness (A4R) proposes four conditions (publicity, relevance, revisability and enforcement) that must be met if legitimacy and fairness are to be ascribed to decisions about priority setting. The relevance condition of A4R has been criticized for…

The authors present key challenges, both methodological and practical against using multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA) in health technology assessment (HTA) as well as solutions to these challenges. They showcase lessons learned from previous applications of MCDS to HTA, including design, criteria of models, approaches for estimating costs and challenges with various approaches. By showing efforts that have succeeded in overcoming these challenges in lower and middle income-countries, they show how MCDA has the potential to…

The authors discuss a framework for mulicriteria decision making for healthcare decision making that was created and used by the EVIDEM Collaboration between 2006 and 2017. This framework originally incorporated healthcare ethics, evidenced-based medicine, health economics, health technology assessment and multicriteria approaches to decision making. The authors present this modified 10th edition framework, which builds on these by enhancing the following 4 areas: universal healthcare, values and ethics, evidence-based interventions, and process transformation. The goal of this American Journal of Preventive Medicine supplement on “The Use of Economics in Informing U.S. Public Health Policy” is to influence policy researchers to identify and undertake economic research that generates the key evidence needed to inform policy.
