This review monograph was prepared in response to a request from the United States Air …
This review monograph was prepared in response to a request from the United States Air Force Research Laboratory for a study of modern decision science that would aid in its planning of research programs and, more specifically, developing methods and tools for decision support. The emphasis is on relatively high-level decisionmaking rather than, say, that of pilots or intelligence analysts in the midst of real-time operations. They focus largely on what the military refers to as…

This study explores adaptive health technology assessment (aHTA) as an expedited alternative to full HTA, aiming to support universal health coverage by leveraging HTA evidence from other settings. The scoping review identified and mapped existing aHTA methods, examining their triggers, strengths, and weaknesses. Methods included searching HTA agencies' and networks' websites, and published literature, with findings narratively synthesized. The review found aHTA methods in 20 countries and one HTA network across the Americas, Europe, Africa,…

This review examines the inclusion of environmental spillovers in economic evaluations of healthcare products and health technology assessments (HTA). Environmental spillovers, such as CO2 emissions, water and energy consumption, and waste disposal, significantly impact human and planetary health but are often excluded from HTAs. The review's objective is to identify economic evaluations and guidelines incorporating environmental dimensions. Methods included electronic searches of PubMed, Scopus, and EMBASE, as well as official health agencies' guidelines. Documents were…

ReviewPublication 2023Systematic Literature Review of Gaps and Challenges in Value Assessment of Biosimilars: ISPOR Special Interest Group Report
This study addresses the gaps and challenges in the value assessment of biosimilars and proposes …
This study addresses the gaps and challenges in the value assessment of biosimilars and proposes potential approaches to mitigate them. A multidisciplinary team of biosimilar experts conducted a systematic review of literature and engaged in review rounds to identify these challenges. The article suggests that health technology assessment agencies should accept the comparability exercise approved by regulatory authorities and conduct price comparisons for biosimilars reimbursed for the same indication as the reference biologic. In cases…

ReviewPublication 2023How Values Are Discussed, Reflected Upon, and Acted on by Patients and Family Caregivers in the Context of Heart Failure: Scoping Review
The study examines how values influence decision-making and coping among heart failure (HF) patients and …
The study examines how values influence decision-making and coping among heart failure (HF) patients and their family caregivers (FCGs). Through a scoping review of 16 empirical studies, patient values were found to influence self-care behaviors and left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation decisions, with variations in prioritization over time and contexts. Conflicts between prioritized values and recommended self-care activities led to modifications in behavior. Patient survival emerged as a top value during cardiac device decisions.…

This study reviews the application of multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA) in healthcare, aiming to clarify its use across various decision-making contexts. The authors updated a 2013 systematic review by searching Embase, MEDLINE, and Google Scholar for English-language MCDA studies published from August 2013 to November 2020. Additionally, grey literature from January 1990 to November 2020 was reviewed via the Trip Medical Database and Google. Information on decision context, criteria, methods, stakeholders, and sensitivity analyses was…

The article emphasizes the significance of decision analysis in aiding clinicians to make evidence-based choices between testing and treatment strategies. While clinicians may not conduct decision analyses themselves, they often rely on publications or guidelines derived from them. The review outlines the structure of a decision tree and equips clinicians with the skills to critically evaluate decision analyses and implement their findings in medical decision-making. It highlights two critical judgments clinicians can make: first, assessing…

Science literacy is often held up as crucial for avoiding science-related misinformation and enabling more informed individual and collective decision-making. But research has not yet examined whether science literacy actually enables this, nor what skills it would need to encompass to do so. This report addresses three questions to outline what it should mean to be science literate in today’s world: (1) How should we conceptualize science literacy? (2) How can we achieve this science…
