Lesson/ModuleVideo, Teaching Resource 2018An Overview of Decision Analysis
This video is intended to provide high-level overview of the field of decision analysis and …
This video is intended to provide high-level overview of the field of decision analysis and presents topics that include: why engage in decision analysis; what are the differences between cost-effectiveness analysis, cost-utility analysis, cost-benefit analysis, and budget impact analysis; and different ways to conduct a decision analysis – such as modeling or measuring alongside a clinical trial. This video is part of the Conducting Cost-Effectiveness Analysis with VA Data (HCEA) free course offered by the…

Regulatory impact analyses (RIAs) weigh the benefits of regulations against the burdens they impose and are invaluable tools for informing decision makers. The Consumer’s Guide to Regulatory Impact Analysis: Ten Tips for Being an Informed Policymaker offers 10 tips for non-specialist policymakers and interested stakeholders who will be reading RIAs as consumers.

This module examines three scientific areas that provide evidence bearing on causation in the “toxic tort” or environmental disease context: epidemiology, toxicology, and genetics. These scientific disciplines are used in civil lawsuits and in regulatory proceedings in which causation or risk is an issue. The module is appropriate for non-scientist law students as well as others interested in learning the science of toxic tort causation, including practicing attorneys, judges, and public policy and public health…

Using the currently topical issue of whether SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) anti-depressants cause birth defects, the module aims to provide students with a general understanding of the following: (1) human risk factor causation as determined by epidemiologic methods; (2) the limits of non-human toxicological evidence to the assessment of causality in humans; (3) the importance of pharmacovigilance for all medications; (4) special difficulties in identifying causes of human birth defects; (5) the importance of…

This module engages students in learning about association and causation in the context of vaccines, …
This module engages students in learning about association and causation in the context of vaccines, their side effects, and legal issues that could arise as a result of side effects associated with vaccinations. The module employs five case studies. In the first two case studies, a child receives a vaccination, and students must determine whether an event (vaccination) causes a side effect in the child. In the third case study, a child who has not…

This case study explores the experiences of three Manhattan-based hospitals during Superstorm Sandy in 2012. It focuses on decisions made by each institution, as Sandy approached, about whether to shelter-in-place or evacuate hundreds of medically fragile patients, and how each of the three hospitals took a different approach, informed by differing perceptions of risk and related factors. The case will be useful for public health students and administrators in understanding decision-making in settings of an…

This self-directed tutorial walks through the development of a decision tree using Amua to evaluate three initial management strategies for ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) based on a published analysis: Soeteman DI, Stout NK, Ozanne EM et al. Modeling the Effectiveness of Initial Management Strategies for Ductal Carcinoma in Situ. J Natl Cancer Inst 2013; 105 (11): 774-781. The tutorial describes how to build the model structure, parameterize the model probabilities and outcomes based on…

This self-directed tutorial is for a decision analytic model related to the execution and management of prescribed burns within forests. This tutorial builds upon the work of the publication: Cohan D, Haas SM, Radloff DL, Yancik RF. Using Fire in Forest Management: Decision Making Under Uncertainty. Interfaces 1984; 14 (5): 8-19. Trial-based economic evaluations are increasingly conducted to support healthcare decision-making but there are inevitable methodological challenges. This tutorial provides step-by-step guidance on how to combine appropriate statistical methods using a ready-to-use R script, and addresses missing data, correlated costs and effects, baseline imbalances, and skewness of costs and/or effects. The authors also provide the theoretical background of these methods, and demonstrate their application through a simulated trial-based economic evaluation.
