Lesson/ModuleVideo, Teaching Resource 2018How Can Cost Effectiveness Analysis be Made More Relevant to U.S. Health Care?
This video is intended to provide an overview of how cost-effectiveness analysis is used to …
This video is intended to provide an overview of how cost-effectiveness analysis is used to guide health policy decisions in other countries and identify barriers to using these findings in the U.S., along with tips on how to increase the chances that these findings will be implemented. This video is part of the Conducting Cost-Effectiveness Analysis with VA Data (HCEA) free course offered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Health Services Research and Development…

This policy brief aims to explain the cost per DALY threshold and the concepts of …
This policy brief aims to explain the cost per DALY threshold and the concepts of health opportunity costs, especially aimed at low and middle-income countries. The authors state that an assessment of health opportunity costs is required if the best use is to be made of health and healthcare resources. This requires an assessment of whether the improvement in health outcomes they offer exceeds the improvement in health that would have been possible if the…

This tutorial describes both the intent of extended cost-effectiveness analysis and its keys to allow …
This tutorial describes both the intent of extended cost-effectiveness analysis and its keys to allow easy implementation for health policy assessment. Extended cost-effectiveness analysis was developed to address health policy assessment, specifically to evaluate the health and financial consequences of public policies in four domains: (1) the health gains; (2) the financial risk protection benefits; (3) the total costs to the policy makers; and (4) the distributional benefits.

This tutorial explains distributional cost-effectiveness analysis as a framework for incorporating health inequality concerns into the economic evaluation of health sector interventions. Using an illustrative example comparing alternative ways of implementing the National Health Service (NHS) Bowel Cancer Screening Programme the authors describe the technical details of how to conduct distributional cost-effectiveness analysis. The 2 key stages are 1) modeling social distributions of health associated with different interventions, and 2) evaluating social distributions of health…

This tutorial walks through the development of a decision tree model based on a published cost-effectiveness analysis of routine screening for autoimmune encephalitis in patients with first-episode psychosis in the United States based on the published article: Ross EL, Becker JE, Linnoila JJ, Soeteman DI. Cost-Effectiveness of Routine Screening for Autoimmune Encephalitis in Patients with First-Episode Psychosis in the United States. J Clin Psychiatry 2020; 82 (1): 19m13168. Trial-based economic evaluations are increasingly conducted to support healthcare decision-making but there are inevitable methodological challenges. This tutorial provides step-by-step guidance on how to combine appropriate statistical methods using a ready-to-use R script, and addresses missing data, correlated costs and effects, baseline imbalances, and skewness of costs and/or effects. The authors also provide the theoretical background of these methods, and demonstrate their application through a simulated trial-based economic evaluation.

This video is intended to provide researchers with an introduction to the second part of conducting a meta-analysis: quantitatively pooling. The goal of this meta-analysis is to synthesize multiple published estimates from parameters of interest (such as disease-related mortality or the efficacy of a treatment) into a single input for use in a decision model. This video is part of the Conducting Cost-Effectiveness Analysis with VA Data (HCEA) free course offered by the U.S. Department of…

This video is intended to provide a discussion on various methods for deriving probabilities that are needed for decision models. Presented are the concepts of literature based Odds Ratios and Relative Risks, which need to be transformed into probabilities, how to deal with probability estimates from time frames not relevant to the model in question, and how to derive probabilities from published summary statistics. This lecture is aimed at the researcher who is interested in operationalizing…
