ReportPublication 2012Mortality Risks in Environment, Health and Transport
This report presents a major meta-analysis of value of a statistical life (VSL) estimates derived …
This report presents a major meta-analysis of value of a statistical life (VSL) estimates derived from surveys around the world. The analysis seeks to explain the differences in the estimates, for example across countries. Differences in incomes and the magnitude of the risk reduction were found to be the factors having the strongest impact, but numerous other policy-relevant factors are also important. The report also presents advice on how VSL estimates can be best used…

This collection brings together more than 50 contributions from some of the most influential researchers in health economics. It covers theoretical and empirical issues in health economics, with a range of material on equity and efficiency in health care systems, health technology assessment and issues of concern for developing countries. This revised second edition is expanded to include four new chapters, while all existing chapters have been extensively updated. The Elgar Companion to Health Economics, Second Edition…

ArticlePublication 2011Cost-Effectiveness of Psychotherapy for Cluster C Personality Disorders
This article, published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, describes a probabilistic Markov cohort model …
This article, published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, describes a probabilistic Markov cohort model that compares the cost-effectiveness of five treatment modalities (long-term outpatient psychotherapy, short-term and long-term day hospital psychotherapy, and short-term and long-term inpatient psychotherapy) for patients with cluster C personality disorders. The analyses are conducted from the societal and payer perspectives. Patient-level data comes from 466 patients with cluster C personality disorders who were admitted to 6 specialist centers of psychotherapy…

ArticlePublication 2011Valuing Mortality Risk Reductions: Progress and Challenges
This article focuses on the value of mortality risk reduction, an important component of the …
This article focuses on the value of mortality risk reduction, an important component of the benefits estimates for environmental policies. In recent years, the number, scope, and quality of valuation studies have increased dramatically. Revealed-preference studies of wage compensation for occupational risks, on which analysts have primarily relied, have benefited from improved data and statistical methods. Stated-preference research has improved methodologically and expanded dramatically. In these studies, researchers have explored many issues concerning the validity…

ArticlePublication 2011Model-Based Analyses to Compare Health and Economic Outcomes of Cancer Control: Inclusion of Disparities
In order to identify strategies that improve both population health and ensure its equitable distribution, …
In order to identify strategies that improve both population health and ensure its equitable distribution, the authors developed a typology of cancer disparities that considers types of inequalities among black, white, and Hispanic populations across different cancers. This paper reports on the typology using an existing disease simulation model of cervical cancer that was calibrated to clinical, epidemiological, and cost data in the United States and presents characteristics important for policy discussions. The typology proposed…

This learning module provides lessons about health economics containing activities, worksheets, notes, and answers on …
This learning module provides lessons about health economics containing activities, worksheets, notes, and answers on a number of skills in probability calculations. Using mathematics, these exercises engage students by tackling real world issues in health decision-making. These activities are recommended to be used together but can also be used independently. They are aimed at a high school learning level, age 16 or higher.

This packet of lessons on evaluating risk contains videos, activities, worksheets, notes, and answers on analyzing statistical data. Using mathematics, these exercises engage students by tackling real world issues in health decision-making, such as the risk of eating bacon sandwiches. These activities are recommended to be used together but can also be used independently. They are aimed at a high school learning level and higher.

GuidelinesPublication 2011Calibrating Models in Economic Evaluation
This article provides guidance on the theoretical underpinnings of different calibration methods used for mathematical …
This article provides guidance on the theoretical underpinnings of different calibration methods used for mathematical models for economic evaluations. The calibration process is divided into seven steps and different potential methods at each step are discussed, focusing on the particular features of disease models in economic evaluation. The seven steps are (i) Which parameters should be varied in the calibration process? (ii) Which calibration targets should be used? (iii) What measure of goodness of fit…

This article reports on a study to estimate the clinical outcomes, costs, and cost-effectiveness of …
This article reports on a study to estimate the clinical outcomes, costs, and cost-effectiveness of neonatal intensive care in Mexico. The authors conducted a cost-effectiveness analysis using a decision analytic model of health and economic outcomes following preterm birth. Model parameters governing health outcomes were estimated from Mexican vital registration and hospital discharge databases, supplemented with meta-analyses and systematic reviews from the published literature. Costs were estimated on the basis of data provided by the…
