ReviewPublication 2008Cost-Effectiveness of Vaccination: Review of Modelling Approaches
This review examines the modelling approaches used in cost-effectiveness analyses (CEAs) of vaccination programs. After …
This review examines the modelling approaches used in cost-effectiveness analyses (CEAs) of vaccination programs. After overviewing the key attributes of models used in CEAs, a framework for categorizing theoretical models is presented. Categories are based on three main attributes: static/dynamic; stochastic/deterministic; and aggregate/individual based.

This article, written for the non-decision analyst, describes what decision analysis is, what it can and cannot do, why one should care to do this, and how one does it. Keeney describes decision analysis as "a formalization of common sense for decision problems which are too complex for informal use of common sense." He provides a more technical definition also, describing decision analysis as "a philosophy, articulated by a set of logical axioms, and a methodology…

ReviewPublication 2024Cost-Effectiveness of Newer Pharmacologic Treatments in Adults with Type 2 Diabetes: Systematic Review of Cost-Effectiveness Studies for the American College of Physicians
This systematic review examines the cost-effectiveness of newer antidiabetes medications for type 2 diabetes in …
This systematic review examines the cost-effectiveness of newer antidiabetes medications for type 2 diabetes in the United States. The study screened nonindustry-funded cost-effectiveness analyses (CEAs) conducted from 2010 to 2023, focusing on estimating cost per quality-adjusted life-year (QALY) gained. Nine CEAs met the criteria, evaluating medications such as glucagon-like peptide-1 agonists (GLP1a), dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP4i), and sodium–glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i), among others. Comparisons were made against metformin, sulfonylureas, neutral protamine Hagedorn (NPH) insulin, and…

This study explores adaptive health technology assessment (aHTA) as an expedited alternative to full HTA, aiming to support universal health coverage by leveraging HTA evidence from other settings. The scoping review identified and mapped existing aHTA methods, examining their triggers, strengths, and weaknesses. Methods included searching HTA agencies' and networks' websites, and published literature, with findings narratively synthesized. The review found aHTA methods in 20 countries and one HTA network across the Americas, Europe, Africa,…

ReviewPublication 2023Systematic Literature Review of Gaps and Challenges in Value Assessment of Biosimilars: ISPOR Special Interest Group Report
This study addresses the gaps and challenges in the value assessment of biosimilars and proposes …
This study addresses the gaps and challenges in the value assessment of biosimilars and proposes potential approaches to mitigate them. A multidisciplinary team of biosimilar experts conducted a systematic review of literature and engaged in review rounds to identify these challenges. The article suggests that health technology assessment agencies should accept the comparability exercise approved by regulatory authorities and conduct price comparisons for biosimilars reimbursed for the same indication as the reference biologic. In cases…

The article emphasizes the significance of decision analysis in aiding clinicians to make evidence-based choices between testing and treatment strategies. While clinicians may not conduct decision analyses themselves, they often rely on publications or guidelines derived from them. The review outlines the structure of a decision tree and equips clinicians with the skills to critically evaluate decision analyses and implement their findings in medical decision-making. It highlights two critical judgments clinicians can make: first, assessing…

The internet has become a popular resource to learn about health and to investigate one's own health condition. However, given the large amount of inaccurate information online, people can easily become misinformed. Individuals have always obtained information from outside the formal health care system, so how has the internet changed people's engagement with health information? Motivated by the need for evidence on cardiovascular disease (CVD) interventions offering good value for the money, the authors conducted a systematic review, including 50 studies. Included studies were those that reported full economic evaluations of individual and population-based interventions (pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic), for primary and secondary prevention of CVD among adults in LMIC. The majority of the studies were of modelled evaluations, with significant heterogeneity in methods. Most of the economic evaluations evaluated were…
