Tutorial/PrimerPublication, Teaching Resource 2005Refining Clinical Diagnosis with Likelihood Ratios
This article serves as a concise tutorial about the interpretation and use of likelihood ratios …
This article serves as a concise tutorial about the interpretation and use of likelihood ratios in clinical decision-making. Likelihood ratios can refine clinical diagnosis on the basis of signs and symptoms; however, they are underused for patients' care. A likelihood ratio is the percentage of ill people with a given test result divided by the percentage of well individuals with the same result. Ideally, abnormal test results should be much more typical in ill individuals…

Trial-based economic evaluations are increasingly conducted to support healthcare decision-making but there are inevitable methodological challenges. This tutorial provides step-by-step guidance on how to combine appropriate statistical methods using a ready-to-use R script, and addresses missing data, correlated costs and effects, baseline imbalances, and skewness of costs and/or effects. The authors also provide the theoretical background of these methods, and demonstrate their application through a simulated trial-based economic evaluation.

This article provides a tutorial on Bayesian approaches for model calibration. It describes the theoretical basis for Bayesian calibration approaches as well as pragmatic considerations that arise in the tasks of creating calibration targets, estimating the posterior distribution, and obtaining results to inform the policy decision. These considerations, as well as the specific steps for implementing the calibration, are described in the context of an extended worked example about the policy choice to provide (or…

The purpose of the HTA Glossary is to give the Health Technology Assessment (HTA) community – both producers and users of health technology assessment information – a common vocabulary. The HTA glossary is an official collaboration between International Network of Agencies for Health Technology Assessment (INAHTA), Health Technology Assessment international (HTAi) and other partner organizations. The English version of the HTA Glossary is coordinated by Adelaide Health Technology Assessment (AHTA), the French version by l'Institut…

This policy brief aims to explain the cost per DALY threshold and the concepts of health opportunity costs, especially aimed at low and middle-income countries. The authors state that an assessment of health opportunity costs is required if the best use is to be made of health and healthcare resources. This requires an assessment of whether the improvement in health outcomes they offer exceeds the improvement in health that would have been possible if the…

This tutorial describes both the intent of extended cost-effectiveness analysis and its keys to allow easy implementation for health policy assessment. Extended cost-effectiveness analysis was developed to address health policy assessment, specifically to evaluate the health and financial consequences of public policies in four domains: (1) the health gains; (2) the financial risk protection benefits; (3) the total costs to the policy makers; and (4) the distributional benefits.

This tutorial explains distributional cost-effectiveness analysis as a framework for incorporating health inequality concerns into the economic evaluation of health sector interventions. Using an illustrative example comparing alternative ways of implementing the National Health Service (NHS) Bowel Cancer Screening Programme the authors describe the technical details of how to conduct distributional cost-effectiveness analysis. The 2 key stages are 1) modeling social distributions of health associated with different interventions, and 2) evaluating social distributions of health…
