ReportPublication 2017DCP3: Cardiovascular, Respiratory, and Related Disorders
This report from the World Bank is the fifth volume of the Disease Control Priorities, …
This report from the World Bank is the fifth volume of the Disease Control Priorities, Third Edition (DCP3) series. It addresses the disease burden of cardiovascular, respiratory, and related disorders (CVRDs), which account for more than half of global adult deaths, mostly in low- and middle-income countries. While CVRDs are mostly preventable or can be treated to reduce morbidity, such interventions are costly and require greater capacity to detect and treat early. When combined with…

This report from the World Bank is the fourth volume of the Disease Control Priorities, Third Edition (DCP3) series. It discusses the prevalence of mental, neurological, and substance use disorders, as well as the associated disability and premature mortality that can accompany them. Despite the high social and economic burden of these diseases on individuals, families, and communities, these disorders have been systematically neglected, especially in low- and middle-income countries, and there has been limited…

This report from the World Bank is the third volume of the Disease Control Priorities, …
This report from the World Bank is the third volume of the Disease Control Priorities, Third Edition (DCP3) series. It presents data on the complex patterns of cancer incidence and deaths globally, and offers evidence on effective measures to control cancers. This report identifies settings in which cancer treatment may be ineffective or wasteful, and offers alternative cancer care packages that are cost-effective and better suited to low-resource environments. The Disease Control Priorities Network (DCP)…

This report from the World Bank is the first volume of the Disease Control Priorities, Third Edition (DCP3) series. Essential Surgery presents data on the surgical burden of disease, disability, congenital abnormalities, and trauma, as well as the health impact and economic analysis of procedures. This report identifies 44 procedures that address substantial needs, are cost effective, and are feasible to implement in low- and middle-income countries. The authors applied a generalized cost-effectiveness analysis (GCEA) approach, applying a null reference case, in which the effects of currently implemented interventions were subtracted from current rates of burden, in order to identify the most efficient package of interventions that could be applied to Road Traffic Injuries (RTIs). They used a population model to estimate costs and effectiveness of interventions over a 100 year time frame in eastern sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia. All heath…

This resource pack includes guidelines for health economic evaluation - methods designed to identify, measure and value the incremental resources used, relative to benefits gained, of alternative interventions or policies - with the goal of improving resource allocation decisions by addressing efficiency in healthcare. The selected examples focus predominantly on the conduct of cost-effectiveness analysis. Over the past three decades, cost-effectiveness analysis has gained increasing attention from decision makers in both resource-rich and resource-poor countries.…

ArticlePublication 2018Equity Impact Vaccines May Have on Averting Deaths and Medical Impoverishment
In this analysis, authors estimated the number of deaths averted and the number of cases …
In this analysis, authors estimated the number of deaths averted and the number of cases of medical impoverishment averted of ten antigens and their corresponding vaccines across income quintiles for forty-one low- and middle-income countries. The study found that vaccines administered between 2016 and 2030 would prevent 36 million deaths. Vaccines will have the greatest impact on reducing cases of poverty caused by hepatitis B, helping an estimated 14 million people avoid medical impoverishment. An…

Many low- and middle-income countries now aspire to universal health coverage, where governments ensure that all people have access to the quality health services they need without risk of impoverishment. But for universal health coverage to become reality, the health services offered must be consistent with the funds available-and this implies tough everyday choices for policymakers. This publication argues that the creation of an explicit health benefits plan-a defined list of services that are and are…
