ArticlePublication 2010Alternative Strategies to Reduce Maternal Mortality in India: A Cost-Effectiveness Analysis
This article, published in PLoS Medicine, conducted a cost-effectiveness analysis of strategies to improve pregnancy …
This article, published in PLoS Medicine, conducted a cost-effectiveness analysis of strategies to improve pregnancy and childbirth safety in India. Country- and region-specific data were synthesized using a computer-based model that simulates the natural history of pregnancy and pregnancy-associated complications in individual women, and considers delivery location, attendant, and facility level. Model validation compared projected maternal indicators with empiric data. Strategies consisted of improving coverage of effective interventions that could be provided individually or packaged…

ArticlePublication 2022WHO ACTION-I Trial in Low Resource Countries
This study evaluated the cost-effectiveness of dexamethasone administration in dexamethasone in pregnant women at risk …
This study evaluated the cost-effectiveness of dexamethasone administration in dexamethasone in pregnant women at risk of early preterm birth using data from a multicentre, randomized, placebo-controlled trial in Bangladesh, India, Kenya, Nigeria, and Pakistan. Primary cost data were collected in 28 hospitals across the 5 countries. A decision tree model was used to compare dexamethasone treatment to no intervention from a health-care sector perspective. Administration of dexamethasone averted 38 neonatal deaths per 1000 woman–baby units…

ArticlePublication 2022Comparing Health Gains, Costs & Cost-Effectiveness of Interventions in Australia & New Zealand
This paper synthesizes the health gains, costs, and cost-effectiveness of health interventions in Australia and New …
This paper synthesizes the health gains, costs, and cost-effectiveness of health interventions in Australia and New Zealand (NZ) from studies conducted with comparable methods, and reports results in the form of an online interactive league table. Studies from the Australia Cost-Effectiveness research and NZ Burden of Disease Epidemiology, Equity and Cost-Effectiveness Programmes and studies were included which reported health-adjusted life years (HALYs) and net health system costs and/or incremental cost-effectiveness ratios, used a time horizon of…

ArticlePublication 2018Cost-Effectiveness of Strategies to Prevent Road Traffic Injuries in Eastern Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia: New Results from WHO-CHOICE
The authors applied a generalized cost-effectiveness analysis (GCEA) approach, applying a null reference case, in …
The authors applied a generalized cost-effectiveness analysis (GCEA) approach, applying a null reference case, in which the effects of currently implemented interventions were subtracted from current rates of burden, in order to identify the most efficient package of interventions that could be applied to Road Traffic Injuries (RTIs). They used a population model to estimate costs and effectiveness of interventions over a 100 year time frame in eastern sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia. All heath…

ArticlePublication 2016An Extended CEA of Schizophrenia Treatment in India under Universal Public Finance
This paper evaluates the potential health and financial risk protection effects of a policy of …
This paper evaluates the potential health and financial risk protection effects of a policy of universal public finance (UPF) to treating schizophrenia in India. The study uses the extended cost effectiveness analysis framework across income quintiles. The results show financial protection benefits concentrated in the richest income quintiles, while health gains were concentrated among the poorest. The value of insurance is highest for the poorest income and decreases as the household income increases. In settings…

ArticlePublication 2016Maternal-Related Deaths and Impoverishment among Adolescent Girls in India and Niger

This article, published in BMJ Open, examined the distribution of maternal deaths and impoverishment among adolescent girls across socioeconomic groups in Niger and India, which have the largest fertility rate, and number of maternal deaths, respectively. Results showed that in Niger and India, the poorer adolescents had a larger number of maternal deaths compared to the richer. Impoverishment occurred mostly among the richer adolescents in Niger and among the poorer adolescents in India. Increasing educational…

This study performed a retrospective extended cost-effectiveness analysis simulation study of Vietnam's 2007 comprehensive motorcycle helmet policy. Modeling results showed that following its introduction, the helmet policy likely prevented approximately 2,200 deaths and 29,000 head injuries, saved individuals US$18 million in acute care costs and averted US$31 million in income losses. From a societal perspective, such a comprehensive helmet policy would have saved $11 000 per averted death or $830 per averted non-fatal injury.

This chapter presents an approach for performing benefit-cost analysis using cleft lip and palate (CLP) repair as a model surgical intervention in a subspecialty hospital dedicated to CLP in India, and a benefit-cost analysis based on secondary data that model the benefit and cost of cesarean delivery for treatment of obstructed labor in 47 low- and middle-income countries. This chapter is from Essential Surgery, the first volume in the Disease Control Priorities, third edition (DCP3) series. The…

ArticlePublication 2014Effect of Health-Facility Admission and Skilled Birth Attendant Coverage on Maternal Survival in India
Research in areas of low skilled attendant coverage found that maternal mortality is paradoxically higher …
Research in areas of low skilled attendant coverage found that maternal mortality is paradoxically higher in women who seek obstetric care. Using unmatched population-based case-control analysis of national datasets, the authors compared the effect of health-facility admission at any time (antenatal, intrapartum, postpartum) on maternal deaths (cases) to women reporting pregnancies (controls). Probability of maternal death decreased with increasing skilled attendant coverage, among both women who were and were not admitted to a health-facility; however,…
