Benefit-Cost Analysis for Selected Surgical Interventions

2015

This chapter presents an approach for performing benefit-cost analysis using cleft lip and palate (CLP) repair as a model surgical intervention in a subspecialty hospital dedicated to CLP in India, and a benefit-cost analysis based on secondary data that model the benefit and cost of cesarean delivery for treatment of obstructed labor in 47 low- and middle-income countries.

This chapter is from Essential Surgery, the first volume in the Disease Control Priorities, third edition (DCP3) series. The volume presents data on the surgical burden of disease, disability, congenital anomalies, and trauma, along with health impact and economic analyses of procedures, platforms, and packages to improve care in settings with severe budget limitations. Other chapters related to economics and financing include:

  • Costs, Effectiveness, and Cost-Effectiveness of Selected Surgical Procedures and Platforms. Link.
  • Task-Sharing or Public Finance for Expanding Surgical Access in Rural Ethiopia. Link.
  • Global Surgery and Poverty Link.

DCP3 endeavors to inform program design and resource allocation at the global and country levels by providing a comprehensive review of the effectiveness, cost, and cost-effectiveness of priority health interventions. Link.
