Trends in Maternal Mortality 2000 to 2020

2023

This report presents global, regional, and country-level estimates and trends for maternal mortality between 2000 and 2020 produced by the United Nations Maternal Mortality Estimation Inter-Agency Group (MMEIG).* The estimates are intended to inform progress in maternal mortality to support national efforts to meet Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target 3.1, to reduce maternal mortality to less than 70 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births by 2030.

The report is accompanied by a set of country profiles, downloadable datasets, and data visualizations, where users can explore and compare maternal mortality data and trends by country.

Users may also download a zip folder of country profiles that include estimates for the years 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015 and 2020 of the total live births, maternal deaths, HIV-related indirect deaths, the maternal mortality ratio (MMR) (maternal deaths per 100,000 live births for women of reproductive age, 15-49 years) and the proportion of maternal deaths (PM) (proportion of all-cause deaths for women of reproductive age).

*The United Nations Maternal Mortality Estimation Inter-Agency Group (MMEIG) is a consortium that includes the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the World Bank Group and the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Population Division (UNDESA/Population Division).
