Teaching Pack: Cost-Effectiveness Analysis II

2022

In this teaching pack on Economic Evaluation: Cost-Effectiveness Analysis II, students are introduced to the concepts of the ‘competing choice’ analysis where the choice is between mutually exclusive options and how to recognize strong and weak dominance. Additionally, students learn to plot the results of the competing choice analysis, including how to display dominated options, and finally, students are shown how to structure, conduct and interpret results of a cost-effectiveness analysis that combines the ‘shopping spree’ and ‘competing choice’ methods. Materials include an instructor's note, videos, companion slides, a glossary, an annotated bibliography, and sample exercises.

Learning Objectives

  • Learn to conduct an analysis focused on choosing between mutually exclusive options (‘competing choice’) and identify strong and weak dominance.
  • Learn to plot the results of a competing choice analysis on a graph of costs relative to benefits, display the dominated options graphically, and explain results clearly.
  • Structure, conduct, and interpret the results of a cost-effectiveness analysis that combines ‘shopping spree’ methods and ‘competing choice methods’.

This teaching pack was developed by Sue J. Goldie at the Center for Health Decision Science, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. The multimedia components were developed as part of a series of pilots in the CHDS Media Hub, led by Jake Waxman, where media-based pedagogy experiments contribute to new ways of thinking about short form content. More than 75 multimedia segments were created with a creative and consistent look and feel, designed to foster connection and social proximity with the instructor, while leveraging evidence-based multimedia design principles to optimize cognitive strategies for the learner.
