Videos: Part 2. Putting Utilities into Decision Trees and Understanding Them

2022

This multimedia segment, Part 2. Putting Utilities into Decision Trees and Understanding Them, includes three videos. It follows skills and content covered in Part 1. Measuring Preferences for a Decision Tree. In addition to the videos, materials include an instructor's note, companion slides, a glossary, an annotated bibliography, and sample exercises.

The utilities measured in Part 1 are put back into the surgery treatment decision tree to evaluate the optimal choice based on individual preferences.

Two hypothetical individuals’ utilities are used to illustrate differences across people and across assessment methods. Students review standard gamble utilities for “Flo” and “Maya” to understand how preferences are person-dependent. They also review standard gamble, time trade-off and visual analog scores two health states for Flo to gain an appreciation for the difference in values that result from using different elicitation methods.

Multimedia segment Part 2. Putting Utilities into Decision Trees and Understanding Them (Videos 2.1, 2.2, 2.3) was designated to follow Part 1. Measuring Preferences for a Decision Tree (Videos 1.1, 1.2, 1.3).

This teaching pack was developed by Sue J. Goldie and Eve Wittenberg at the Center for Health Decision Science, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. The multimedia components were developed as part of a series of pilots in the CHDS Media Hub, led by Jake Waxman, where media-based pedagogy experiments contribute to new ways of thinking about short form content.
