Lesson/ModuleVideo, Teaching Resource 2018Evidence Synthesis Part I: Systematic Literature Review
This video is intended to provide researchers with an introduction to the first part of …
This video is intended to provide researchers with an introduction to the first part of conducting a meta-analysis: a systematic literature review. The goal of this meta-analysis is to synthesize multiple published estimates from parameters of interest (such as disease-related mortality or the efficacy of a treatment) into a single input for use in a decision model. This video is part of the Conducting Cost-Effectiveness Analysis with VA Data (HCEA) free course offered by the…

Lesson/ModuleVideo, Teaching Resource 2018Estimating Transition Probabilities for a Model
This video is intended to provide a discussion on various methods for deriving probabilities that are …
This video is intended to provide a discussion on various methods for deriving probabilities that are needed for decision models. Presented are the concepts of literature based Odds Ratios and Relative Risks, which need to be transformed into probabilities, how to deal with probability estimates from time frames not relevant to the model in question, and how to derive probabilities from published summary statistics. This lecture is aimed at the researcher who is interested in operationalizing…

Ths video is intended to provide a review the HERC Average Cost and the Managerial Cost Accounting data system and the different data sets useful for providing cost and utilization data for research studies. This video is part of the Conducting Cost-Effectiveness Analysis with VA Data (HCEA) free course offered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Health Services Research and Development group focused on cost-effectiveness analysis and budget impact analyses. There were a total…

This video is intended to provide high-level overview of the field of decision analysis and presents topics that include: why engage in decision analysis; what are the differences between cost-effectiveness analysis, cost-utility analysis, cost-benefit analysis, and budget impact analysis; and different ways to conduct a decision analysis – such as modeling or measuring alongside a clinical trial. This video is part of the Conducting Cost-Effectiveness Analysis with VA Data (HCEA) free course offered by the…

This video is intended to summarize the main recommendations about the design and conduct of cost-effectiveness …
This video is intended to summarize the main recommendations about the design and conduct of cost-effectiveness analyses from the Second Panel on Cost-Effectiveness in Health and Medicine (2016), including the use of multiple perspectives, and the use of public protocols to detail how the analysis was conducted. This video is part of the Conducting Cost-Effectiveness Analysis with VA Data (HCEA) free course offered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Health Services Research and Development group…

ArticlePublication 2018Should We Treat Acute Hepatitis C? A Decision and Cost-Effectiveness Analysis
This study examines the potential benefits of treating acute hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection compared …
This study examines the potential benefits of treating acute hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection compared to deferring treatment until the chronic phase, utilizing a microsimulation model. By projecting long-term outcomes such as quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) and costs, the analysis evaluates the cost-effectiveness of initiating therapy during the acute phase. Results indicate that treating acute HCV increases QALYs by 0.02 and costs by $483 per patient not at risk of transmitting HCV, yielding an incremental…

This article aimed to compare the health and economic impact of 3 services recommended by …
This article aimed to compare the health and economic impact of 3 services recommended by the US Preventive Services Task Force for the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD): (1) aspirin counseling for the primary prevention of CVD and colorectal cancer, (2) screening and treatment for lipid disorders (usually high cholesterol), and (3) screening and treatment for hypertension. A microsimulation model was used to compare lifetime outcomes from the societal perspective for a US-representative birth…

Based on data from the Systolic Blood Pressure Intervention Trial (SPRINT), the authors of this article compared the cost-effectiveness of intensive versus standard control in adults at high risk for cardiovascular disease who received intensive systolic blood-pressure control. A microsimulation model was used to project lifetime costs of treatment and monitoring, cardiovascular disease events and subsequent treatment costs, treatment-related risks of serious adverse events and subsequent costs, and quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs) for the two strategies.…

Testing for and treating latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) is among the main strategies to achieve TB elimination in the United States. This analysis estimated health outcomes, costs, and cost-effectiveness of LTBI testing and treatment among non-US born residents with and without medical comorbidities (e.g., diabetes, HIV infection, and end-stage renal disease). A decision analytic tree and Markov cohort simulation model was used to compare the following strategies: no testing, tuberculin skin test (TST), interferon gamma release assay…
