Health Systems Evidence is a continuously updated repository of syntheses of research evidence about governance, financial and delivery arrangements within health systems. In addition to systematic reviews, the portal also includes economic evaluations in these same domains, descriptions of health system reforms (with links to syntheses and economic evaluations when possible), and descriptions of health systems (to assist with assessments of the local applicability of research evidence and of how reforms are embedded within health…

The Society for Risk Analysis (SRA) is a multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, scholarly, international society that provides an open forum for all those who are interested in risk analysis. Risk analysis is broadly defined to include risk assessment, characterization, communication, management, and policy. It covers risks of concern to individuals, to public- and private-sector organizations, and to society at a local, regional, national, or global level. This lesson plan from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) was curated to teach high school students, grades 9-10, to explore decision-making around natural disaster emergencies. The lesson includes a video, public health emergency response data, and a response plan. It explores interactive cases of cholera in Haiti after an earthquake and breaks down risk factors and different approaches to the scenario. Students make informed decisions based on this data, exploring public health…

The authors applied a generalized cost-effectiveness analysis (GCEA) approach, applying a null reference case, in which the effects of currently implemented interventions were subtracted from current rates of burden, in order to identify the most efficient package of interventions that could be applied to Road Traffic Injuries (RTIs). They used a population model to estimate costs and effectiveness of interventions over a 100 year time frame in eastern sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia. All heath…

In this teaching pack on Valuing Individual Health Outcomes, students learn how to assign quantitative values to health outcomes at the individual level, including: expected utility theory, the axioms of this theory, distinguishing between preference-based measures of value and health-related quality of life outcomes, measuring utility using the standard gamble, the time trade-off, and the visual analog scale, and understanding the limitations of these measures. Materials include an instructor's note, videos, companion slides, a glossary,…

The American Public Health Association (APHA), was founded in 1872 dedicated to improving the health of all U.S. residents. Two of the Association’s most important functions are advocacy for adoption by the government of the most current scientific advances relevant to public health, and public education on how to improve community health. Along with these efforts, they have also campaigned for developing well-organized health departments at both the federal and local levels. In 1966, APHA…

The CEA Registry is a comprehensive database containing detailed information on more than 14,500 standardized cost-effectiveness ratios and more than 21,900 utility weights published in over 5,600 peer-reviewed cost-utility analyses. It details studies published from 1976 through 2016 and is regularly updated. These studies estimate health benefits, in terms of quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs), and incremental costs for a wide range of health and medical interventions. Open access is provided for basic search functions against the…

This case study explores the experiences of three Manhattan-based hospitals during Superstorm Sandy in 2012. It focuses on decisions made by each institution, as Sandy approached, about whether to shelter-in-place or evacuate hundreds of medically fragile patients, and how each of the three hospitals took a different approach, informed by differing perceptions of risk and related factors. The case will be useful for public health students and administrators in understanding decision-making in settings of an…

This study examines the financial risks associated with seeking trauma care for road traffic injuries in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Conducting a cross-sectional survey from December 2018 to February 2019 in three public and one private hospital, the research analyzes out-of-pocket (OOP) expenditures related to trauma care. Data from 452 trauma cases are collected, encompassing both medical and non-medical costs. Catastrophic health expenditures, defined as OOP health expenditures exceeding 10% of total household expenditures, are assessed,…
