Smoking is considered the leading risk factor for mortality among the Armenian population. The authors conducted an extended cost-effectiveness analysis (ECEA) on increases in the excise tax on cigarettes in Armenia. Based on the World Health Organization recommendations, they analyzed the impact of a 75% increase of excise tax on the retail price of cigarettes. The ECEA found large health and financial benefits to the excise tax. It averted about 88,000 premature deaths, US$63 million of OOP…

The EuroQol Group first met in 1987 in order to develop a standardized non-disease specific instrument to describe and value health-related quality of life. A process based on shared development, local experimentation and discussion resulted in EQ-5D, a measure that generates a single index value for health status for use in health care evaluation. EQ-5D is a standardized instrument developed as a measure of health-related quality of life that can be used in a wide…

Caregivers, family and friends play a significant role in supporting people with mental illness, and it has long been recognized that informal carers constitute a significant ‘hidden’ workforce in Australia. Getting the right diagnosis is a key aspect of health care - it provides an explanation of a patient's health problem and informs subsequent health care decisions. The diagnostic process is a complex, collaborative activity that involves clinical reasoning and information gathering to determine a patient's health problem.
