ArticlePublication 2016Health and Economic Benefits of Public Financing of Epilepsy Treatment in India
This study uses extended cost-effectiveness analysis (ECEA) to evaluate the impact of three scenarios of …
This study uses extended cost-effectiveness analysis (ECEA) to evaluate the impact of three scenarios of publicly financed national epilepsy programs in India that provide (1) first line antiepilepsy drugs (AEDs), (2) first- and second-line AEDs, and (3) first- and second-line AEDs and surgery. Outcome measures include disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) averted, and cost per DALY averted. Economic benefit measures estimated include out-of-pocket (OOP) expenditure averted and money-metric value of insurance. All three scenarios represent a…

ArticlePublication 2018Poverty Reduction & Equity Benefits of Measles, Rotavirus and Pneumococcal Vaccines in LMICs
This study uses the extended cost effectiveness analysis (ECEA) to evaluate the impact of immunization …
This study uses the extended cost effectiveness analysis (ECEA) to evaluate the impact of immunization against measles, severe pneumococcal disease and severe rotavirus for birth cohorts vaccinated over 2016–2030 for three scenarios in 41 Gavi-eligible countries: no immunization, current immunization coverage forecasts and the current immunization coverage enhanced with funding support. Following the distribution of the cases by socioeconomic group, the study found that the number of catastrophic health costs (CHC) cases attributable to measles,…

This report from the World Bank is the second volume of the Disease Control Priorities, …
This report from the World Bank is the second volume of the Disease Control Priorities, Third Edition (DCP3) series. It focuses primarily on maternal conditions, childhood illnesses, and malnutrition, addressing topics from maternal mortality and morbidity, to acute illness and undernutrition in children under five, to the transition to older childhood and the illnesses that accompany this transition. ReportPublication 2017DCP3: Cardiovascular, Respiratory, and Related Disorders
This report from the World Bank is the fifth volume of the Disease Control Priorities, …
This report from the World Bank is the fifth volume of the Disease Control Priorities, Third Edition (DCP3) series. It addresses the disease burden of cardiovascular, respiratory, and related disorders (CVRDs), which account for more than half of global adult deaths, mostly in low- and middle-income countries. While CVRDs are mostly preventable or can be treated to reduce morbidity, such interventions are costly and require greater capacity to detect and treat early. When combined with…

ReportPublication 2015DCP3: Cancer
This report from the World Bank is the third volume of the Disease Control Priorities, …
This report from the World Bank is the third volume of the Disease Control Priorities, Third Edition (DCP3) series. It presents data on the complex patterns of cancer incidence and deaths globally, and offers evidence on effective measures to control cancers. This report identifies settings in which cancer treatment may be ineffective or wasteful, and offers alternative cancer care packages that are cost-effective and better suited to low-resource environments. The Disease Control Priorities Network (DCP)…

ReviewPublication 2018Primary & Secondary Prevention Interventions for Cardiovascular Disease in LMIC's
Motivated by the need for evidence on cardiovascular disease (CVD) interventions offering good value for …
Motivated by the need for evidence on cardiovascular disease (CVD) interventions offering good value for the money, the authors conducted a systematic review, including 50 studies. Included studies were those that reported full economic evaluations of individual and population-based interventions (pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic), for primary and secondary prevention of CVD among adults in LMIC. The majority of the studies were of modelled evaluations, with significant heterogeneity in methods. Most of the economic evaluations evaluated were…

The authors examine the complexities of the vaccine enterprise, a fundamental component of preventive medicine and public health, from research and development of new vaccines to financing and reimbursement of immunization services. The current climate, socially, economically and politically, presents challenges and opportunities to the U.S. to strengthen the existing systems of developing, manufacturing, regulating, distributing, funding, and administering safe and effective vaccines for all people. The authors present recommendations for priority actions intended to…

ArticlePublication 2018Equity Impact Vaccines May Have on Averting Deaths and Medical Impoverishment
In this analysis, authors estimated the number of deaths averted and the number of cases …
In this analysis, authors estimated the number of deaths averted and the number of cases of medical impoverishment averted of ten antigens and their corresponding vaccines across income quintiles for forty-one low- and middle-income countries. The study found that vaccines administered between 2016 and 2030 would prevent 36 million deaths. Vaccines will have the greatest impact on reducing cases of poverty caused by hepatitis B, helping an estimated 14 million people avoid medical impoverishment. An…
