This report from the World Bank is the first volume of the Disease Control Priorities, Third Edition (DCP3) series. Essential Surgery presents data on the surgical burden of disease, disability, congenital abnormalities, and trauma, as well as the health impact and economic analysis of procedures. This report identifies 44 procedures that address substantial needs, are cost effective, and are feasible to implement in low- and middle-income countries. This chapter is part of a report entitled, Decision and Simulation Modeling in Systematic Reviews, that seeks to provide guidance for determining when incorporating a decision-analytic model alongside a systemic review would be of added value for decision making purposes. The chapter discusses the role of decision analysis and decision-analytic models in health care, specifically within the context of the current emphasis on evidence-based medicine and the proliferation of systematic reviews. It describes the types of model available…

This report on the opioid public health crisis was released by the White House Council …
This report on the opioid public health crisis was released by the White House Council on Economic Advisors (CEA) in November 2017. It corrects previous estimates of related costs by adding the value of the associated deaths. Earlier estimates focused on medical and other expenditures, while the new report also includes estimates of the value that individuals place on reducing their own risks of premature mortality. The report notes that, in 2015, over 33,000 Americans…

Smoking is considered the leading risk factor for mortality among the Armenian population. The authors conducted an extended cost-effectiveness analysis (ECEA) on increases in the excise tax on cigarettes in Armenia. Based on the World Health Organization recommendations, they analyzed the impact of a 75% increase of excise tax on the retail price of cigarettes. The ECEA found large health and financial benefits to the excise tax. It averted about 88,000 premature deaths, US$63 million of OOP…

ReportPublication 2016Above Service Delivery Activities: Cost, Impact, and Efficiency
Costs incurred by health programs for activities conducted above the front-line facility or community setting …
Costs incurred by health programs for activities conducted above the front-line facility or community setting constitute a substantial share of health program spending. Despite the important of these activities in the delivery of major health services, and despite the vast sums spent above the point of service delivery, far less is known about their costs compared with costs at the point of service delivery. This report provides a landscape analysis of these service delivery activities and technical efficiency…

This workshop report summarizes a workshop convened by the Institute of Medicine to explore the potential uses of simulation and other types of modeling for improving health. Participants worked to identify how modeling could inform population health decision making (selecting and refining potential strategies, ranging from interventions to investments) based on lessons learned from models that have been, or have not been, used successfully, opportunities and barriers to incorporating models into decision making, and data needs and…
