National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine

2024

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, founded in 1863,  has a mission to provide nonpartisan, objective guidance for decision makers on policy challenges in the context of science, engineering, and medicine. NAS reports and convening activities have a wide range of impacts on policy and practice. They guide the development of federal laws and regulations, improve the effectiveness of government programs, shape the direction of research fields, and inform public knowledge and dialogue about issues of critical importance.

Their work includes systematic information collection and evidence analysis, convening and cross-disciplinary deliberation, disseminating key policy reports across sectors, informing and educating civil society, and providing a broad range of resources. These publicly available resources include the full text of thousands of reports online published by the National Acadmies Press and the Transportation Research Board, access to 3 journals, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the ILAR journal, published quarterly about the use, care and oversight of laboratory animals, and the Transportation Research Record with collections of papers on transportation related topics.  Additional resources include periodicals on a variety of topics including engineering, science and medicine, and other activities at the Academies, annual reports to Congress, Informational booklets designed to improve public understanding of important and complex scientific, engineering and medical issues and an e-newsletter that provides weekly updates.
