This model-based analysis evaluated the impact of a city excise tax of $0.01/ounce of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) in Baltimore, Charlotte, Columbus, Denver, Detroit, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Louisville, Oklahoma City, Phoenix, San Diego, San Jose, and Seattle. The CHOICES microsimulation model for each of these 15 cities was used to calculate the costs and effectiveness of a city excise tax. This is a stochastic, discrete-time, individual-level, microsimulation model designed to simulate the experience…

This model-based analysis evaluated the impact of a state excise tax on sugary drinks based on either solely the size of the beverage (volume tax) or both beverage size and sugar content (graduated tax). The CHOICES microsimulation model for Alaska was used to calculate the costs and effectiveness of a volume or graduated sugary drink tax over 10 years (2015–25). The model used data from the U.S. Census, American Community Survey, Alaska Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance…

This model-based analysis assessed the benefits, costs, and cost-effectiveness of implementation of an increase of the state excise tax by either $0.02/ounce or $0.01/ounce of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs), administered by the West Virginia Department of Revenue and based on the current excise tax in West Virginia. The CHOICES microsimulation model for West Virginia was used to calculate the costs and effectiveness over ten years (2015–25). This is a stochastic, discrete-time, individual-level microsimulation model designed to…

This analysis assessed the benefits, costs and cost-effectiveness of implementation of an increase of the state excise tax by either $0.02/ounce or $0.01/ounce of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs), administered by the New Hampshire Department of Revenue Administration (DORA) and based on proposals considered by federal, state, and local governments. The CHOICES microsimulation model for New Hampshire was used to calculate the costs and effectiveness over ten years (2015–25). The model uses data from the U.S. Census,…

This brief provides a summary of the CHOICES Learning Collaborative Partnership simulation model of a $0.02-per-ounce state excise tax on sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB). The tax, which would be administered by the Washington State Department of Revenue (DOR), would aim to reduce consumption of calorie-dense, nutrient-poor beverages. Research has linked SSB consumption to excess weight gain, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. SSB consumption may increase the risk of developing chronic diseases via effects on body mass index…

The CHOICES microsimulation model for Denver was used to calculate the costs and effectiveness over 10 years (2017–27) associated with implementation of a state excise tax on sugary drinks, at a tax rate of $0.02/ounce. The model used data from the U.S. Census, American Community Survey, Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, NHANES, National Survey of Children’s Health, the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey, multiple national longitudinal studies, and obesity prevalence data provided by Denver Public Health…
