Key Messages from DCP3, Volume 1: Essential Surgery

2015

This review article from The Lancet summarizes the analyses from volume one of Disease Control Priorities, Third Edition (DCP3), published by the World Bank, entitled “Essential Surgery.” The volume presents data on the surgical burden of disease, disability, congenital abnormalities, and trauma, as well as the health impact and economic analysis of procedures. In this article, the authors summarize and critically assess the volume’s five key findings related to surgically avertable disease burden, cost-effectiveness and economics, improvements to access, improvements to quality, and essential surgery in the context of universal health coverage. They argue that full coverage for universally available essential surgery would efficiently and equitably provide health benefits, financial protection, and contributions to stronger health systems.
