Resource Pack: Books on Decision Making and Thinking
2023
This resource pack, curated by the Center for Health Decision Science, features books about how we think, learn, and decide. We aim to provide an introduction to some of the core concepts in decision theory and psychology with this collection, and hope that it will stimulate further inquiry. These books are geared to a general audience; the majority are very accessible reads.
The collection is broadly divided into three categories. The first is made up of books describing how we should think and decide, if we want to make the best choices possible in service of our goals. Resources in this first group are:
- Smart Choices: a Practical Guide to Making Better Decisions
- Value-Focused Thinking
- How Bayes' Rule Cracked the Enigma Code and Emerged from Two Centuries of Controversy
The second group is about how people actually do think and make decisions, whether rational or irrational. This field of science is also referred to as behavioral economics, or descriptive decision science, as it describes how we think and act. Resources in this group include:
- Thinking, Fast and Slow
- How We Decide
- Predictably Irrational: the Hidden Forces that Shape our Decisions
- Nudge: Improving Decisions About Health, Wealth, and Happiness
- The Undoing Project: a Friendship that Changed our Minds
- Behavioural Economics: a Very Short Introduction
The third group of books feature elements of both the first and second. Resources in this group include:
- Thinking and Deciding
- Thinking: The New Science of Decision-Making, Problem-Solving, and Prediction in Life and Markets
- The Signal and the Noise: Why So Many Predictions Fail--but Some Don't
